History

Founder: 1860-1963

The company's founder, Louis-Ulysse Chopard, is a Swiss watchmaker growing up in Sonvilier, a town close to Bern. In 1860, he founded the L.U.C manufacturing company in Sonvilier, after observing that it was more profitable to market the finished watch than just making mechanical movements.

After the death of Louis-Ulysse in 1915, the company was taken over by his son Paul-Louis and his grandson Paul-Andrà ©  ©. This company specially make pocket watch and women watch. In 1921, Paul-Louis moved the company's operations to a larger city, Chaux-de-Fonds, in the Canton of NeuchÃÆ' ¢ tel. In 1937, at that time a company with 150 employees, the company moved to Geneva. This allows movements made by the company to be certified with the Geneva Seal, a sign used only to watch movements made at the Geneva Canton. Paul-AndrÃÆ'  © took over the company in 1943.

In 1963, having no child wishing to continue his business, Paul-AndrÃÆ' Â © Chopard sold it to Karl Scheufele III, a German goldsmith and watchmaker from Pforzheim, who was looking for a specialized watch movement producer for his own business.

1963-2010

In 1974, the Chopard factory moved from the Geneva center to the Meyrin-Geneva and in 1976 the company began making watches containing free-floating diamond signatures behind sapphire cups. In the 1980s, the company evolved into making sports watches for men and diamond jewelry for women.

In 1996, the company set up a complete watch-making facility at Fleurier, in Switzerland's Canton of NeuchÃÆ'Â ¢ tel. Prior to that time, all Chopard movements had been collected from third party components. Movements made at Fleurier are meant for high end watches in the Chopard range.

In 2010, the company celebrated its 150th anniversary, at which time the company's sales forecast was EUR550 million (of which EUR250 million came from watches) with about 100 stores worldwide.
