Histori
The band originally consisted of Scroggins brothers, Renee (vocals), Valerie (drums), Deborah (bass) and Marie (congas, vocals) and friend Tito Libran (congas, vocals). The band's name stands for emerald, sapphire, and gold. Emeralds and sapphires are the birthstones of Valerie and Renee Scroggins, and gold refers to certification of records. Ed Bahlman found ESG while serving as a judge for talent shows and becoming an unofficial band manager.
Tony Wilson from Factory Records approached the band after performing at Hore on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, and three days later they began recording with Martin Hannett in Manchester, England. They recorded "Moody" and "You're No Good" on the first take. Hannett had three minutes left in the master recordings, so he had a recording of the band "UFO". The tape helped bring Bahlman's focus to the band. On December 3, 1980, he recorded the appearance of ESG on Hore, which became the B-side for ESG . Bahlman made a partnership with the Factory so that the label 99 Notes could release the EP in 1981. In July, they made a second emphasis on the note. It was received positively by music critics. Robert Palmer calls it the "freshest record" of 1981. The New York Times placed second ESG in the best list of EPs and tapes of 1981, and The Village Voice puts a third EP on Pazz & amp; Jop critics' poll.
1982 ESG Says Dance to Beat of Moody The EP goes on with the same tone, as well as their first album, 1983 Come Away with ESG .
