Royal Canin produces and supplies dog and cat feed worldwide. The Company also conducts research into the formulation and testing of breeds and specific symptoms of the nutritional needs of dogs and cats.
It was founded by a French animal surgeon after he successfully treated a number of skin conditions and coats on a pet by giving them a cereal-based meal that he prepared in his garage. After importing the extruder from the US, this company is the first to produce dry pet food in France. Aimed primarily at breeders, production continues to increase and distribution extended further into the European market. Sold to Guyomarc'h Group in 1972, he experienced a period of further expansion, especially in the field of research and development, before it was purchased by Bank Paribas in 1990. The company floated on the French exchanges but was later removed after it was sold to Mars, Incorporated.

Company history
The company was founded by the French veterinary surgeon Jean Cathary in 1968. He has a veterinary practice in a village in the Gard region of France and is concerned that many pet people are being confronted with various health problems, especially skin conditions and coats. Sure the cause is diet, Cathary devised a cereal-based recipe, which she prepared in the oven in her garage.
Eating patterns successfully alleviate the problem of pets is served, so in 1968, Cathary enrolled food under the trademark "Royal Canin". He closed his veterinary practice to concentrate on manufacturing and distributing feed. Extruder imported from the US and Royal Canin became the first producer of dry pet food in France and the first European company to use the extruder. The main target markets are German Shepherd breeders and associations; Television ads are used to promote products, something that competitors do not do.
Production continued to increase and in 1970, the company was included as "Royal Canin S. A."; larger factories opened in Aimargues and began distribution across Europe. Forty staff are employed in the annual production of five thousand five hundred tons of feed. The subsidiary, Royal Canin Iberica, was established in Spain. In March 1972, Cathary sold the company to Guyomarc'h Group, a much larger family-run fodder business founded by Jean Guyomarc'h in 1954, specializing in animal feed.
The period under Guyomarc'h's ownership sees the expansion of the company, particularly in the field of research and development. A special research center opened in Saint-Nolff, Brittany, during 1973. For ten years to 1982, subsidiary subsidiaries were also established in other European countries. These include Italy, Sweden, Belgium, Spain, Germany and Denmark. Another factory was built in northern France to serve sales in countries in northern Europe.
The Guyomarc'h group of companies was bought by Bank Paribas in 1990. Royal Canin recorded losses in 1993; the following year Guyomarc'h's group was divided into four separate businesses, one of which remained as Royal Canin. The bank wanted to sell Royal Canin but its chairman managed to persuade him to record it in the Paris stock exchange, which took place in 1997. Forty-three percent of the company floated in the stock market and increased the company's valuation to four and a half billion francs. The additional revenue earned provided funds to purchase Crown Pet Foods in 1999 and the James Wellbeloved brand in 2000.
The bank sold its stake in the company to Mars, Incorporated in July 2001 for more than one and a half billion euros. The majority of this payment, almost ninety-three percent, is for "good faith". The European Commission only approved the takeover by Mars if Royal Canin dumped some assets to Agrolimen, a Spanish company. Royal Canin is removed from the list of stock exchanges after being taken over by Mars.
In March 2004, Royal Canin acquired US and Canada animal food brands IVD, Medi-Cal and Techni-Cal from Del Monte Foods for $ 82.5 million.
In 2008, as much as eighty percent of Royal Andin's one and a half billion euro revenue was generated from sales outside France. The number of staff employed worldwide is around four thousand five hundred.

Research
Royal Canin based its bait production on scientific research and established an initial research center dedicated to this at St-Nolff in 1973; The next research center was established in Missouri in the late 1980s, and there are also research facilities in Brazil. Products are tested on "focus groups" of eighty cats and two hundred and fifty dogs. Dr. Daniel Cloche is one of the first scientists working at a company's French research facility and he has been described as "one of the pioneers in researching bone-related disorders and diseases among dogs". Research shows bone problems in large dogs can be diet, so different recipes are developed to specifically address this. In 1980, Royal Canin issued a new feed called AGR, especially for puppies categorized as large breeds. At that time, the company also turned its attention to producing cat food to fit special dietary needs.
In-depth research allows the company to produce products tailored to the animal's needs in terms of breeds, health requirements, age and exercise levels. Henri Laguarde was chairman of the company during the 1990s and was the driving force behind the implementation of the three core policies. It is that pet physiology and biology should be studied to increase the company's knowledge base; all products must meet special needs, further supported by the Research and Development section with mandatory instructions that "no veterinarian or university should be able to dispute any of the Royal Canin's nutrition arguments"; and finally, the animals and their nutritional needs should be treated with "knowledge and respect" rather than humanized. The theme of the company becomes "knowledge and respect".
Veterinary skills and breeder relationships
During 1994, Laguarde determined the company should be seen as dealing with "specialists". He insisted that the word "traditional" should not be used and the word was removed from every document and the company's computer files were replaced by "specialists" instead.
There is a team of trained veterinary technicians to assist and advise the breeders and other professionals. The company creates new descriptions for trained sales staff teams as "cynotechnicians", who are already established and passionate about the world of dogs; some show judges or have earned an international reputation for their breeding skills. The company also sponsors and participates in thousands of cat and dog shows each year. The company withdrew from sponsoring the event of the British Champions Contest in 2009, but was quoted as saying that it increased its sponsorship of the dog show.
Veterinary and peer-reviewed journal
With the help of academics, the company also produces an encyclopaedia of dog and cat races, which has been translated into fifteen languages. There are also books on breeding, nutrition and publications aimed at breeders and animal surgeons. Royal Canin also publishes scientific quarterly titled FOCUS which is circulated to over seventy thousand veterinarians worldwide in eleven different languages. FOCUS is now called a magazine Veterinary Focus . This is in addition to the fourteen hundred and fifty veterinary literature produced for the Waltham Pet Nutrition Center.
Factory
The Royal Canin headquarters is located in Aimargues, southern France. There are twelve production facilities around the world, in addition to the Aimargues included in Cambrai in northern France; Johannesburg, South Africa; Descalvado, Brazil; and GonzÃÆ'ález CatÃÆ'án, near Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The factory, located in Rolla, Missouri, USA, produces only dry pet food. Royal Canin was fined for "violating the Clean Water Act" in 2005 on this site.
In 2004, a production facility in Dmitrov, near Moscow, Russia, was opened. Royal Canin is committed to twelve million euros in plant construction and anticipates an annual production of twenty-two thousand tons per year.
The Polish government announces construction will begin in February 2006 at a fifty million euro factory in Niepo? Omice, Poland, which will provide employment for over one hundred and fifty staff. At the time of the announcement, it was described as "the ninth and most modern of all that the company possesses"; this is because the lab will be included in the design.
The company's first UK facility, in Castle Cary, near Bristol, opened in December 2007, two years later than expected. Annual production is estimated to be two thousand tons, employing eighty staff. Despite objections raised by some locals, others welcomed the facility. The Environment Agency received complaints about "unbearable odor" after production began. The company installed a new carbon and condenser filter for a million pounds in an effort to address the problem.
In 2008, the company invested seventy-three million dollars in plant construction in Guelph, Ontario, Canada.
A factory in North Sioux City, South Dakota, USA, was originally purchased by Mars in 2007 and worked under the brand of Mars Petcare. It was later revamped into Royal Canin in 2011, where it produces wet and dry animal foods.
The twelfth production facility of Royal Canin was built completely at the end of 2009 and is located in Shanghai, China.
Call back
As of April 30, 2012, the FDA has reported no Class I, II, or III drawn by Royal Canin since the multi-brand FDA-affects "Melamine in Pet Food Recall" March/April 2007.
Controversial sponsors
In 2013, Four Paws, an international animal welfare group, accused Royal Canin of sponsoring events that included fishing for illegal bears in Ukraine. The Company justified the allegations and promised to take action to terminate its sponsorship of such an event. Subsequently the company made a commitment to support the rescue of the bears used and initiated negotiations with the group to determine the detailed project plan.
