Formula One
Jordan (2002)
In 2002 Sato graduated to Formula One with a Honda-backed Honda team, and paired up with Giancarlo Fisichella. His low point was an extraordinary accident in Austria, which was caused when Nick Heidfeld lost control of his Sauber under braking and crashed into the side of Sato's car, punching a hole in the side of the cockpit. As long as he shows flashes of speed but also driving wildly, but the team's faith in Sato is reciprocated by a good drive for fifth at his Grand Prix home in Suzuka.
BAR (2003-05)
With Honda focusing solely on British American Racing for 2003, Sato joined the Brackley-based outfit as a tester. For the final round in Japan Sato replaced Jacques Villeneuve and scored a second point ending his career with a sixth, despite colliding with Michael Schumacher. He signed for a full-time race in 2004. His season was marred by many machine failures, suffering no fewer than six. In spite of Sato's aggressive driving style this paid dividends at the US Grand Prix, after the team did not complain under Sato's secure car condition with some overtaking moves daring to score his first podium, the first for a Japanese rider since Aguri Suzuki at the Japanese Grand Prix 1990. He finished eighth in the championship with 34 points and helped the team to second in the Constructors championship.
Sato was defended by BAR-Honda for the 2005 season, but the 2005 car was not as close to the front of the pack as the previous year's design. Sato missed the Malaysian Grand Prix because of illness, and both drivers were disqualified from the San Marino Grand Prix and the entire team was banned from the next two races for using a less heavy car when all the fuel was removed. The court did not find that this was intentional. Sato's season never recovered from that point, after an accident-ridden season that included being disqualified from the Japanese Grand Prix due to an over-ambitious move on Jarno Trulli, Sato was not re-signed for 2006, even though Honda took full control of the team.
Super Aguri (2006-08)
Sato joined the new Super Aguri F1 team for 2006, run by former Japanese driver, Aguri Suzuki. The new outfit was actually a Honda B-team but ran the first half of the season with a modified version of the A23 Arrows chassis 2002. Nevertheless, Sato's reputation improved thanks to his professional attitude and competitive spirit. The team introduced a new car, SA06 at the German Grand Prix and at the end of the Sato season surpassed the Midland car. At the end of the season in Brazil, Sato occupies tenth position just two places below one point and ahead above Toro Rossos and Spyker MF1.
For 2007, Super Aguri runs a reworked version of the Honda RA106 chassis the year before. Their performance improved drastically when Sato made it to Q3 in the Australian Grand Prix. He then scored the first points for the team at the Spanish Grand Prix. At the Canadian Grand Prix, Sato finished sixth after the race that had seen him move from the center of the grid to the fifth highest, passing Ferrari Kimi RÃÆ'äikkÃÆ'önen before the pit stop mistake dropped him back to the eleventh. He climbed five places in the last 15 laps, passing Toyota Ralf Schumacher and then on the 67th round of McLaren-Mercedes world champion Fernando Alonso; final bait greeted with cheers around the track.
Financial problems began to affect the team in the winter holiday season and the Japanese squad just reached the opening round of the 2008 season in Australia. The team used a modified Honda RA107 chassis, which was launched just before Friday's first Friday practice session. The car was just as uncompetitive as Honda in 2007 and the team withdrew from Formula One after the Spanish Grand Prix.
At the end of 2008, Sato took part in a test at Jerez with Scuderia Toro Rosso, to become a candidate to fill the seat left by Sebastian Vettel. He competed against former Toro Rosso riders Bourhais Bourdais and Red Bull Racing tests and reserve driver Sà © â ⬠<â ⬠Bourdais eventually won the racing seat and in March 2009 it was announced that Sato would not be a reserve driver for the Red Bull team. IndyCar Series
Sato visited the Indianapolis 500 in May 2009. He signed a contract with KV Racing Technology to drive a car in the 2010 IndyCar Series season that ended in position 21, he signed a contract for the same team for 2011.
Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing (2012)
At Indianapolis 500 in 2012, driving for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, Sato chased Dario Franchitti to the finish making a move for the lead and the winning race in the first round of the last round. Though unsuccessful, Sato was honored by the Indianapolis 500 fans to "go for it" in the last round.
AJ Foyt Enterprises (2013- 2016)
For 2013, Sato joined the team of A. J. Foyt, driving the No. car. 14 left by Mike Conway. In the third race of the season in Long Beach, Sato scored IndyCar's first win, at the 52nd beginning of the series, making him the first Japanese rider to win the IndyCar race. Andretti_Autosport_ (2017) "> Andretti Autosport (2017) Sato joins Andretti Autosport for the 2017 season. He later became the first Japanese rider and the first non-Caucasian racer to win the Indianapolis 500. After winning 500, he then won a pole at the Dual in Detroit on Belle Isle. He also eventually won another pole at Pocono Raceway in August. Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing (2018)
On August 26, 2017, it was reported that in 2018, Sato will rejoin RLL driving 16 cars and become a team mate on Graham Rahal because Andretti Autosport is considering returning with Chevrolet in 2018. The move by Andretti does not happen.
