"Ring of Fire", or "The Ring of Fire", is a song written by June Carter Cash and Merle Kilgore and recorded by Johnny Cash. This single appeared on the 1963 Cash album, Ring of Fire: The Best of Johnny Cash . The song was originally recorded by June's sister Anita Carter, on the album's Mercury Records Old and New (1963) as "(Love) Ring of Fire". "Ring of Fire" ranked 4th in 2003 and # 87 on Rolling Stone's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. In June 2014, Rolling Stone rated # 27 in the list of 100 greatest country songs of all time.

The song was recorded on March 25, 1963, and became one of the greatest hits of Cash's career, being number one on the country chart for seven weeks. It was certified Gold on January 21, 2010, by the RIAA and has also sold over 1.2 million digital downloads.

Conception

Although the "Ring of Fire" sounds unpleasant, this term refers to the falling in love that June Carter experienced with Johnny Cash at the time. Some sources state that Carter has seen the phrase "Love is like a burning fire ring," underlined in one of his uncles, A. P. Carter, Elizabeth's poetry book. He worked with Kilgore to write a song inspired by this phrase as he had seen his uncle do in the past. He has written: "There is no way to be in that kind of hell, there is no way to extinguish a fire that burns, burns, burns".

Cash's first wife, Vivian Liberto, offers a different concept of "Ring of Fire" in his book I Walked the Line. He argues that June Carter Cash is not a co-writer of the song: "To this day, it puzzles me to hear the intricate details that June said about writing that song for Johnny. He did not write that song more than I did. is, Johnny wrote the song, when he was drunk and drunk, about certain private body parts of the body. For years he stated that he wrote it himself, and he probably never knew the song actually. "Liberto claims that Cash decided to give Carter's co-writer status because "He needs money".

The song was originally recorded by June's sister, Anita Carter, on her Mercury Records album "Folk Songs Old and New" (1963) as "Ring of Fire". Mercury released Anita's version as a single and it is a "hit hit" feature on Billboard's magazine.

After hearing Anita's version, Cash claimed he had a dream where he heard the song accompanied by the "Mexican horn". Cash stated, "I'll give you about five or six months, and if you do not hit it, I'll record it as I feel." Cash notes that adding trumpets is a change to the sound of the base.

When the song failed to be a big hit for Anita, Cash taped it in her own way, adding the mariachi horns of her dreams. This sound is then used in the song "It Is not Me Babe", which is recorded around the same time. Maybelle's mother and Carter's brothers are clearly featured in the Kas recording singing harmony. Cash played around with some original phrases in the Anita Carter version of the song.

Princess Cash, Rosanne, has stated, "This song is about the transformative power of love and that's what always means to me and that's what will always mean for the Cash kids."

In 2004, Merle Kilgore, who shared a writing credit for a song with June Carter Cash, proposed a song license for a hemorrhoid cream ad. While performing the song live, Kilgore often "mocks" the song for "Preparation Maker H ". However, June's heirs do not have the same thoughts, and they refuse to allow the song to be licensed for the ad.
