The name ring is the name that is assumed for professional purposes by professional wrestlers, martial artists, or boxers.

The names of the rings are developed as a way to allow the wrestling players to hide their true identity from the wrestling fanbase and thus keep the kayfabe intact, or because wrestlers or management consider the athlete's real name unattractive, boring, difficult to pronounce or spell, the wrong one, or projecting the wrong image. Since the advent of the Internet, it is now relatively easy to find the real name of wrestlers, but much more difficult in the past.

Some examples of ring names are Michael Shawn Hickenbottom being Shawn Michaels, Roderick George Toombs being "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, Michael Sean Coulthard being Michael Cole, Dwayne Johnson being The Rock and Chris Irvine being Chris Jericho.

A number of wrestlers have adopted their original names or variations of them to be in-ring persona, sometimes modifying the spelling of their real names to better match their gimmick, such as David Bautista into Batista, Patricia Stratigeas being Trish Stratus and Richard Fliehr to Ric Flair. Others only use parts of their names, such as Bill Goldberg using Goldberg, Kenny Dykstra using Kenny, Nicole Garcia-Colace using Nikki Bella, and Mike Mizanin using The Miz, short for his surname. Many female wrestlers go just by their first names as well. Many also use nicknames in addition to their real names for marketing and other reasons

Some wrestlers (mostly independent), such as Nigel McGuinness, are still working hard to ensure that their real names are not publicly known. Professional wrestlers are often referred to by contemporaries by their ring names. In the interview, Bret Hart regularly refers to Mark Calaway, Curt Hennig, and Kevin Nash under the name of their ring (The Undertaker, Mr. Perfect, and Diesel).

Ringing names are often trademarked by promotions that create a character or gimmick for a player. It is common to see a player using various ring names throughout his career, even if the persona or gimmick remains the same. This is especially true in WWE, which largely forces most wrestlers who debuted since 2006 to use the WWE ring name instead of the ringing name they use on independent circuits or, as with Bryan Danielson and several others, their real names. One recent exception was made to David Otunga because of his real-life relationship with singer Jennifer Hudson, who gave WWE some major exposure. For example, Senshi uses a special ringing name for his second TNA task so he will continue to hold the name of his original ring, Low Ki, used elsewhere. Another example is the 3D Team, formerly known as The Dudley Boyz on ECW and WWE, but WWE trademarked the name that caused them to change their name when they went to TNA. The members' names (Bubba Ray Dudley, D-Von Dudley, and Spike Dudley) were also trademarked by WWE, forcing them to change their names to Brother Ray, Brother Devon, and Brother Runt. WWE revoked some of its policies by 2015, allowing well-known wrestlers in other promotions such as Samoa Joe, A.J. Style, Shinsuke Nakamura, Austin Aries, Karl Anderson, Bobby Roode, and Eric Young to use the names of their old rings (or in the case of Nakamura and Roode, their real names) as well as the wrestlers who signed the NXT "Level 2" contract such as Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa who wrestle in NXT and independent circuits to guard their ring names or (in the case of Gargano) their real names. (Gargano and Ciampa have signed an exclusive WWE contract.) WWE wrestlers "at home" still use the name of the WWE ring.

In rare cases, the right on behalf of a wrestler's ring may be owned by a company with little or nothing to do with professional wrestling, such as Marvel Comics ownership on behalf of Hulk Hogan until early 2003, caused by the Hogan advertised as an extraordinary Hulk Hogan at the start career, while Marvel has a trademark for their comic book character The Incredible Hulk. Sometimes wrestlers will buy rights on behalf of their own ring; for example, Steve Borden has the right to name the Sting ring. Andrew Martin, formerly known as Test, takes this one step further and legally changed his name to Andrew "Test" Martin. Jim Hellwig, known as The Ultimate Warrior, changed his name to "Warrior".

In many cases, the names of the rings evolved over time as the gimmick changed, both subtly and dramatically. After debuting on WWE as "Connecticut Blueblood", Hunter Hearst Helmsley, the character of Paul Levesque transforms into Triple H while forming the D-Generation X. A more drastic change sometimes occurs when the wrestler turns into a babyface or heel, just like when WCW confronts Hulk Hogan joins nWo as Hollywood Hogan. Hogan's new evil attitude is enhanced by changing his costume color scheme from Hulkamania's red and yellow to black and white nwo. Ray's brother adopted the name of Bully Ray when he turned his heels. When Steve Williams joined the wrestling world in the late 1980s, there was already "Dr. Death" Steve Williams. Therefore he adopted the name that eventually became famous, Stone Cold Steve Austin or Stunning Steve Austin, which later became its official name.
