The toe ring is a metal and non-metal ring worn on one toe. The second toe of both feet is the place most often used. This is because proportionally it is the longest toe and thus the easiest toe to put on the ring and remain without connecting to anything else. In most western countries they are relatively new fashion accessories, and usually have no symbolic meaning. They are usually worn with barefooted sandals, anklets, bare feet or flip-flops.

Like finger rings, toe rings come in different shapes and shapes, from intricately designed flowers embedded with gems to simple bands. Fitted toe rings are one-sized rings, whereas adjustable toe rings have a gap at the bottom so they can be easily made to fit.

Ring foot in India

Wearing toe rings practiced in India. The foot ring has been part of Indian culture since the Ramayana era, there has been mention of Sita, when kidnapped by Ravana, throwing her toe ring on the road, so that Rama can find her. So since the days of Ramayana, until now, toe rings have become part of the symbol of a married woman. In many different Indian cultures, the husband placed the toe ring on both legs of his two wives, during the wedding ceremony. It is used as a symbol of a country married by a Hindu woman and is called bichiya (pronounced: bee-chee-ya) in Hindi, minji (??????) in Malayalam jodavi (?????) in Marathi, Mettelu (????????) in Telugu, Metti/Kanaiyazhi in Tamil (? ???/???????), Kaalungura (???????????) in Kannada.

Indian toe rings are usually made of silver and worn in pairs (unlike trends in Western countries, where they are worn singly or in unsuitable pairs) on the second toe of both legs. Traditionally they are quite ornate, though more contemporary designs are now being developed to serve modern brides. Some 'bichiya set' may have a partner for four of five toes, except for small pinky. 'Bichiyas' should not be made of gold, because gold has a 'respected' status and may not be worn under the waist by Hindus, but this is not followed very strictly and gold and diamond-made rings are usually seen. These rings will be placed on the toes and never removed. The rings will show that the woman is married.

Ring rings have other related benefits as shown in Ayurveda. Foot rings have been indicated for use to regulate the menstrual cycle, and thereby increase the likelihood of conception, as mild pressure on the second toe ensures a healthy uterus. Some cultures also say that the pressure felt on the second toe helps to relieve pain during intercourse. Hindu girls are unmarried but put a toe ring on the third toe, to help ease the pain of menstruation.

Ring rings are also worn by men in Tamil culture, usually in simpler designs for comfort. The practice of Tamil people wearing a toe/Metti ring is ideal because in ancient times ordinary people walking with bare feet and toe rings was a way for women to identify married men as it is the norm for women to look down.

In the 19th century mirror rings (ie rings with small mirrors used on them) are sometimes worn on the big toe that is considered for decorative purposes. Currently the toe ring is available in rubber, base metal and is used for decorative purposes. Traditionally, large rings are worn on the left toe to indicate marital status. Some men often wear rings on the big toe for curative purposes or to add to their masculine powers. These rings are circles that are rarely covered but open loops so they are easily removed.
