Ricki and the Flash is a 2015 American drama comedy film directed by Jonathan Demme and written by Diablo Cody, about a woman who left her family to become a rock star and then gets a chance to make amends. Movie stars Meryl Streep, Mamie Gummer, Kevin Kline, Sebastian Stan, Rick Springfield, Audra McDonald, and Ben Platt. The film marks the third collaboration between Streep and Kline after Sophie's Choice (1982) and A Prairie Home Companion (2006). It was Demme's last dramatic film before his death in April 2017.
The subject of photography begins on October 13, 2014, in Rye, New York. TriStar Pictures was financed, and released the film on August 7, 2015.

Plot
Ricki pursues his dream of becoming a famous rock star by leaving his family. She gets a chance to improve things when her ex-husband Pete asks him to visit Indianapolis and help their estranged daughter Julie through tough times.
Ricki has a rock band who plays regular shows in small bars, when he does not work as a cashier to make ends meet. Julie recently tried to commit suicide because her husband was having an affair and divorced her. Despite being bankrupt, Ricki comes to Indianapolis to help his daughter, but Julie is hostile. Likewise, his two sons are hostile and unfriendly. One was gay and the other was recently engaged, though no one told their mother. However, Ricki made it through to Julie. Unfortunately, the second wife of her husband, Maureen, returns unexpectedly, confronts Ricki with some loud truths. He was not there for his children when they needed him and Maureen. Embarrassed, Ricki returns to his band in California angry and bitter, insulting his guitarist who falls in love with him. She makes her realize that she cares and they make love. Maureen sends Ricki an invitation to the son's wedding as an olive branch, but Ricki is unable to leave. Her boyfriend sold his best guitar to pay for tickets. Regardless of his efforts for reconciliation, he is obviously still an outsider. The wedding guests look suspiciously at Ricki when she wakes up to toast the bride. As a gift, having no money, he has his band take over and play for the guests. His son and his bride started a wedding dance and slowly the guests joined.

Diablo Cody based his script on his mother-in-law Terry Cieri, who has led the New Jersey bar band for years. Cody said, "I often watch it on stage, and I think, 'This woman's life is a movie.' " Cody specifically wrote Ricki's role with Streep in mind noting that over 50 actresses in Hollywood usually do not get that complicated part. Ricki and Flash is dedicated to "Rick the Bass Player ", which is the stage name for Rick Rosas who plays "Buster", a Flash bass player in the movie.
Filming
The first filming will begin on October 1, 2014 in New York City. The subject of photography officially began on October 13, 2014, in Rye, New York. On October 14th, Streep was seen recording some scenes in Numi & amp; Hair Salon Co in Rye. On November 3, 2014, she was also seen filming in Nyack, New York. The order of the wedding was taken at Untermyer Park in Yonkers, New York.
Release
On May 6, 2014, Sony TriStar set up a movie for release June 26, 2015. The release date was later changed to August 7, 2015. The film was selected as the opening option for the 2015 Locarno Film Festival held on 5 August 2015 in Locarno, Switzerland.

Ricki and Flash grossed $ 26.8 million in North America and $ 13.3 million in other regions totaling $ 40.1 million worldwide, with a budget of $ 18 million.
The film grossed $ 6.6 million from 1,603 theaters in its opening weekend, ending 7 at the box office. The film added 461 theaters in its second week (total 2,064 screens), but dropped to ninth place with $ 4.6 million (31 percent drop). In its third week, the film earned $ 3 million from 2,013 screens.
The film opens in Italy on September 11, 2015 and occupies fifth position with a total weekend of $ 413,800.
Critical response
Ricki and Flash have received positive criticism from critics. On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film ranked 64%, based on 160 reviews, with an average grade of 6/10. The important consensus of the site reads, "Meryl Streep's incredible work helps Ricki and Flash overcome inconsistent tones and predictable premises." Metacritic gave the film a score of 54 out of 100, based on reviews from 36 critics, showing "mixed or average review". CinemaScore announced that the audience gave this movie the average value of "B" on a scale A to F.
IGN gave the movie a score of 7.8/10, saying, "Ricki and Flash offered a breezy, heartwarming story, if somewhat made about an aging rocker who reconnect with his family".
