Design

Named by Order in the Council as the Jubilee Diamond Medal of Queen Elizabeth II, the Canadian medal was designed by Cathy Bursey-Sabourin, Fraser Herald of the Canadian Heraldic Authority, and produced by the Royal Canadian Mint. It takes the form of a disc with, on the front, a Queen's crown sculpture bounded by the words ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA o CANADA (Latin for "Elizabeth II, by God's Grace, Queen of Canada"). The opposite features Elizabeth's cypher Elizabeth was crowned and superimposed on a diamond shield, behind which is a bed of four maple and ribbon leaves with dates 1952 and 2012 on the left and right shields and VIVAT REGINA (longevity of the Queen) below, all above the diamond field.

In the UK, the medal, better known as the Queen Empress of Queen Diamonds, was designed by Timothy Noad, a calligrapher and illuminator. It illustrates on the front of Ian Rank-Broadley's statue of the Queen crowned with a tiara and is limited by the inscription ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA FID DEF (Latin for "Elizabeth II by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith"). The opposite shows a hexagonal facet with the crown ciphers crowned, written in 1952 and 2012.

Eight Commonwealths in the Caribbean - Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Grenada, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines - each issued a Diamond Jubilee medal. The front has the same Queen statue as an English medal bounded by the words DIAMOND JUBILEE HM QUEEN ELIZABETH II . The reverse shows the royal cypher Elizabeth II with CARIBBEAN REALMS above and the years 1952-2012 below. The medallion itself is coated with rhodium.

Both Canadian and British versions of the worn medals are suspended from broad red ribbons with blue outer lines and, in the middle, double white stripes with red lines between. The Caribbean medal tape is similar to the one mentioned earlier, with a black line between the two middle white lines.

Feasibility and allocation

In the United Kingdom and its overseas territory, 450,000 medals are awarded only to members of the HM Armed Forces (regular and reserves) who have served for more than five years, operational members of HM Prison Service, and emergency service personnel (including Police Support Officers) who have been in paid services, maintaining or in voluntary capacity, and having completed a full five years of calendar service on February 6, 2012. The Canadian Medal, which is to "honor significant contributions and achievements by Canada," is administered by Honorary Chancellor at Rideau Hall and awarded to 60,000 residents and permanent Canadians contributing significantly to their compatriots, their communities, or to Canada for sixty the previous year. Medals may be awarded posthumously if the recipient is alive on February 6, 2012. The medals are allocated either automatically to individuals within a specified category specified - as in the order of priority of Canada, the Order of Canada, or the recipients of the Cross of Valor - or by selection by officials certain, such as the Governor-General, the senator, the Chief of Defense Staff, or the president of various non-governmental organizations. The Governor-General was also allowed to make "extraordinary honors" of medals.

History

In accordance with previous yubilees, plans for the first warning medal were announced by Lord Mandelson's Lord President of the Council in early 2010. The design criteria and feasibility were then announced by Secretary of State for Culture Jeremy Hunt in the summer of 2011, stating "I hope the official medal will be a gratitude to all those who give much on behalf of society and public service and I congratulate all the recipients. "

Canadian Governor General David Johnston announced on 3rd February 2011 that the Queen had approved the creation of the Queen Elizabeth II Canada Jubilee Medal and he and Prime Minister Stephen Harper launched a medal design at Rideau Hall. The first medal was beaten by the Governor-General on December 6 of the same year.

On Access Day 2012, the first Canadian medal was awarded to 60 recipients by the Governor-General at ceremonies at Rideau Hall and others at other locations throughout the country; Prince Edward Island Governor Lieutenant Frank Lewis awarded a medal for six people at a ceremony at Government House. At the same time it was announced that every federal MP (MP) and senator would receive a jubilee medal. At least six members of Quebec's parliament (four members of the bloc qua Ã… © bÃÆ'Â © cois and two for the New Democratic Party (NDP)) refused the honor. MP MP Maria Mourani did so because he felt the medal was "a symbol of colonization" and to accept it would offend his belief in Quebec's sovereignty, while Louis Plamondon stated the money spent by the Crown on the show and marker was a waste. NDP lawmaker Pierre Nantel declared that four months in the House of Commons does not guarantee such recognition and must go to a more appropriate constituency on its way.

Two mayors in rural Ontario return their medal in February 2013, regretting the Canadian Federation of City's choice to distribute medals to all sitting mayors, automatically, declaring that the award should be based on a worthy achievement for that honor.

It was reported in April 2012 that some British medal recipients have been criticized for offering their awards for sale on eBay, while former soldiers and women, Navy Merchants, and St John Ambulance are outraged at being ignored because of "the climate economy." Realizing that "some people and organizations may be disappointed," a government spokesman said: "It is also important to maintain the integrity and exclusivity of medals, and it is impossible to include all of these groups." The contract to produce medals and ribbons was given to a small business consortium holding a royal warrant, led by the Worcestershire Medal Service.
