A core drill is a drill designed specifically to remove material cylinders, such as a hole saw. The material left in the drill bit is called the core .

The core exercises used in metals are called annular cutters. The core exercises used for concrete are generally called Diamond Core Drill and water cooled. For rock drilling, carbide core exercises can be used.

The earliest core exercises were those used by the ancient Egyptians, which were discovered in 3000 BC. Core exercises are used for many applications, both where the core needs to be maintained (drilling tools used in getting core samples often referred to as corers), or where drilling can be done faster because less material needs to be removed than standard bits. This is the reason that diamond-tipped core drills are commonly used in construction to make holes for pipes, manholes, and other large-diameter penetrations in concrete or stone.

Core exercises are often used in mineral exploration where corings may be several hundred to several thousand feet in length. Core samples are recovered and examined by geologists for mineral percentages and stratigraphic contact points. This gives the company the necessary exploration of information to start or leave a mining operation in a particular area.

Prior to the start of World War II, Branner Newsom, a California mining engineer, discovered a drill core that can take large diameter cores up to 16 feet in length for a mining shaft. This type of core drill is no longer in use because modern drill technology allows standard drilling to achieve the same thing at a much cheaper cost.

The core exercises come with several power options including electric, pneumatic, hydraulic (all of which require resources, such as generators).
