History

Antwerp has been the focus of diamond trading since the 15th century. The industry changed when Lodewyk van Berken invented a new form of diamond polishing tool, namely scaif , which allowed the creation of glossy and multifaceted diamonds. It attracts orders from European nobles - and attracts other craftsmen to Antwerp. Charles the Bold assigned him to cut and polish the Florentine Diamonds. In the 1890s a diamond industry was established in Antwerp by a family of diamond merchants and manufacturers from Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Since the end of the 20th century, diamond traders in India and Armenia have become very important in the city's diamond trade. Some of the famous Armenian families involved in the diamond business in the city are Artinians, Arslanians, Aslanians, Barsamians and Osganians.
