Squaw Valley Ski Resort in Olympic Valley, California, is one of the largest ski areas in the United States, and is the home location of the entire 1960 Winter Olympics. It is the second largest ski area on Lake Tahoe after Heavenly , with 30 hanging chairs, 3,600 acres (15 km 2 ) and the only funitel in the US Since Squaw Valley joined Alpine Meadows in 2012, the resort offers joint access to 6,200 acres (25 km < > 2 ), 43 lifts and more than 270 lines. Former University of Nevada skier Wayne Poulsen bought the first 2,000 hectares (8.1 km) from Squaw Valley Ski Resort from Southern Pacific Railroad. Poulsen already has a history in the area: in 1931, he was third in the Olympic trials at Granlibakken in Tahoe City. Shortly after, Poulsen met with Harvard alumnus and trained Alex Cushing's lawyer, who brought in capital, political connections, and increased access to the project. Cushing fell in love with Lake Tahoe after visiting the Sierra in 1946. After a dispute about the future of the resort, Cushing mastered the project and became chairman of the Ski Squaw Valley Company. The resort opened in 1949, and Cushing remained chairman until his death.
Cushing imitates this resort after European skiing destinations. He redesigned the model of a traditional US ski resort by searching for a swimming pool, ice rink, disco roller, and restaurant on the mountain instead of at the base. Squaw Valley hosted a World Cup race in 1969 with four technical events: a giant slalom and slalom for men and women. Squaw Valley was purchased by private equity group KSL Capital Partners in November 2010. A year later, Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows Ski Resort were joined under the leadership of a new umbrella of Squaw Valley Ski Holdings, LLC. The new company operates as one, with joint lift tickets and single season passes for visitors and free transit between locations, but maintains the individuality of both resorts. Alpine Meadows merger and development controversy
In September 2011, Alpine Meadows Ski Resort and Squaw Valley Ski Resort announced their intention to merge ownership. The merger brings together two popular ski destinations under general management by Squaw's Valley parent company KSL Capital Partners, LLC. Alpine Meadow's parents, JMA Ventures, hold a minority stake. The new umbrella entity for these two resorts is known as Squaw Valley Ski Holdings, LLC. Squaw Valley Ski Holdings, LLC is trying to connect two resorts with the "Base-to-Base" gondola. Resort owners need permission from local land managers, including Placer District and Tahoe National Forest who are studying the proposed environmental impacts of the project. A number of conservation organizations, including Sierra Watch and Sierra Club, consider the proposed gondola as a threat to the Granite Chief Wilderness. This proposed combination is supported by White Wolf Mountain owner Troy Caldwell.
In 2016, Squaw Valley Ski Holdings filed a final request for rights to the Village proposal at the Squaw Valley Specific Plan, a $ 1 billion plan that prompted the California Attorney General to write a letter of concern to Placer County. Sierra Watch created a grassroots campaign for "Keep Squaw True", held public events and distributed on-line petitions as opposed to KSL Capital Partners expansion plans.
In November 2016, the Placer District Planning Board approved the controversial proposal for the development of KSL despite resistance from local conservation organizations, including Sierra Watch. Sierra Watch filed a lawsuit to revoke the agreement for violating California Environmental Quality Act in December 2016.
By 2017, resort owners add roller coasters to their development proposals.
