Playa del Carmen ( Spanish pronunciation: Ã, ['pla? a ÃÆ' Â ° el' karmen] ) is a city located along the Caribbean Sea in the municipality of Solidaridad, in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. This is a popular tourist area in eastern Mexico. Playa del Carmen has a variety of tourist activities due to its geographical location on the Riviera Maya. It has also been the destination of PGA Tour golf tournaments and locations set for various television shows. This city became one of the fastest growing population in size in Mexico.

Geography
Playa del Carmen is located on the Riviera Maya, which runs from southern CancÃÆ'ºn to Tulum and the Sian Ka'an biosphere reserve. Playa is a stop for several cruise ships docked at the nearby Calica quartile pier, about six miles (10 km) south of the city. The Xcaret Eco Park, Mexico-themed "eco-archeology park", is a popular tourist destination located south of the city in Xcaret (pronounced "ish-kar-et").
Climate
In October 2005, Hurricane Wilma crossed directly over Playa del Carmen, remaining in its vicinity for two days and causing significant damage and decline while tourist arrivals. Most of the damage is relatively shallow and repaired within weeks of the storm. Hurricane Wilma arrives from the Caribbean Sea, passing Cozumel before landing in Playa del Carmen. Then move north along the coast of Mexico, hitting CancÃÆ'ºn very difficult.

Tourism
Originally a small fishing town, tourism to Playa del Carmen began with a passenger ferry service to Cozumel, an island opposite the Cozumel Channel and the world-famous scuba diving destination.
Playa del Carmen has recently experienced an extreme rapid development with new luxury residential condominium buildings, restaurants, boutiques and entertainment venues. Tourist activities in the Playa del Carmen centers on Quinta Avenida, or Fifth Avenue, which runs from Calle 1 norte to Calle 40. A pedestrian walkway located just one or two blocks to the mainland from the beach, Fifth Avenue is filled with hundreds of shops, bars and restaurants. There are many small boutique hotels in and not far from Fifth Avenue and on the beach.
Playacar is a residential and tourist development in Playa del Carmen just south of the main urban area. Most of the all-inclusive hotels, aviaries and golf courses are located in this development. There are two phases - phase 1 is mostly residential with several hotels and some shops, while Phase 2 contains the largest all-inclusive resort as well as a golf course and a large number of residential properties.
Sports
The city is home to Inter Playa del Carmen, an association football club founded in 1999, competing in the southern group of Segunda DivisiÃÆ'³n Professional, the third tier of the Mexican soccer league system.
The OHL Classic at Mayakoba is a PGA Tour golf tournament held at El CamaleÃÆ'³n Golf Club since 2007.

Telenovela Peregrina takes place in Playa del Carmen. The Real Housewives of Vancouver featured Playa del Carmen in two episodes. The Amazing Race has taken place in Playa del Carmen. The Celebrity Mole was founded in the Playa del Carmen area. The British Reality Series Geordie Shore showcases Playa del Carmen.
Playa del Carmen is host to some of the major annual events. The biggest is the BPM Festival, the world-renowned electronic dance music festival, which to date, takes place in January each year.
