Thieves work through Easter weekend Easter Holidays and Passover vacations, when many nearby businesses (many of them also connected with Hatton Garden jewelery trade) are closed. Police first announced that the facility had been robbed on April 7, and a report based on CCTV footage stated that the attack on the facility began on 2 April. The theft was so significant that the investigation was assigned to the Flying Squad, the branch of Specialist, Organized & amp; The Economic Crimes Command in the London Metropolitan Police Service.

There was no visible sign from the entrance forced into the place. It was reported that robbers had entered the place through a lift shaft, then drilled through a 50cm thick metal wall with a HILTI DD350 industrial electric drill.

On April 8, press reports appeared speculating that a large underground fire in adjacent Kingsway may have begun to create a diversion as part of Hatton Park theft. The London Fire Brigade later stated that the fire was caused by an electrical fault, with no signs of burning.

CCTV footage of the incident was released by the Daily Mirror before the police released it. The video shows people dubbed by the newspaper as "Mr. Ginger, Mr. Strong, Mr. Montana, Gent, Tall Men and Parents".

On April 22, police released photographs inside the vault showing damages caused by robberies, and how robbers used holes drilled in dome walls to pass through the main vault doors.

On May 19, the Metropolitan Police announced that nine arrests had been made in connection with their investigation of the attack.

On September 1, 2015, Aman Hatton Safe Storage Company was liquidated because the business had become bankrupt due to "dry trade" as a result of the theft.
