Histori

Dentists have used gold to fill the cavities (before mercury amalgam becomes available), for the crown, and for other purposes since ancient times. Gold is easily shaped, almost immune to corrosion, and hard enough to form a biting surface that can be used for years. Gold is used before silver becomes available and continues to be used for special purposes. Dental restorations are often made from a combination of precious metals.

World War II

In Auschwitz: A Doctor Eyewitness account , a survivor from Dr. concentration camp MiklÃÆ'³s Nyiszli (who serves in medical kommando Dr. Josef Mengele) described "kommando pulling teeth". A team of eight people, all "stomatologists and dental surgeons" equipped "in one hand with a lever, and on the other a pair of pliers for extracting teeth", worked in the crematorium. Placed in front of the oven, their job is to open the mouths of prisoners who have been gassed and extracted, or broken, "all gold teeth, and all gold jewelry and patches". Teeth are collected and kept in the camp before being sent to Reichsbank for melting and converted into gold bullion, which can then be sold without traces of its origin.

United States

Gold teeth were first present in America during the Jim Crow era. Initially this has become a tradition in Louisiana and around the Mississippi Delta after the slave trade. During Jim Crow it is believed that many African Americans who were former slaves began to get gold caps to replace their decaying teeth. This then became a symbol of wealth and freedom for slaves who had worked in a plantation field in southern Louisiana. African Americans with money will get gold hats on display by Jack Johnson, the first heavyweight boxing champion.

This tradition dates from the late 1700s to the early 1800s when escaped slaves met Indians. Natives helped the slaves escape and they celebrated this freedom giving birth to the Mardi Gras Indians. Many slaves married to Native Americans who wore gold teeth. It became a tradition for African-Americans from Creole France, African descendants and Native Americans to have more than one gold tooth, in honor of their native ancestors. This tradition is very much done by families in New Orleans for centuries.

After Jim Crow, many Louisiana sharing farmers migrated to East Texas. East Texas has the most land and is bought by poor families from Louisiana. Shoes and pimps also had gold teeth during that time. After 1980, gold inlays and gold foil work became scarce in the United States. In the late 1980s they were popularized in New York by Brooklyn native Mike Tyson, who got a golden hat in imitating his idol Jack Johnson. Rapper like Rakim and Slick Rick start roasting gold instead of permanent gold teeth. This trend took place in New York for ten years.

South Africa

Gold teeth in South Africa have become part of South African fashion culture. Gold teeth are very popular in the country with people getting permanent gold teeth since the age of 12 years.

Gold teeth became a major trend in South Africa in the late 1960s among the South African Colored and Black people.

The Permanent Gold Teeth in South Africa is not considered a sign of wealth as in other countries, but fashion trends.

Since the end of Apartheid in many white Afrikaans people and Indians in the country also began to get permanent gold teeth.

The tendency of permanent gold teeth is so great in South Africa that many politicians, celebrities and even priests have it.

The popular belief is that gold will scare off evil spirits (with it being a representation of light in South African culture), Tikoloshe is said to be afraid of light and gold tooth wearers who are generally very superstitious.

Current use

In many parts of the world, including parts of Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and the Caucasus Region, gold teeth are also worn as status symbols. They are regarded as a symbol of wealth and are sometimes installed in place of healthy teeth or as healthy crowns of teeth.

Grills

Grills, metal dentures, have become a popular hip hop mode in the United States since the 1980s. In the early 2000s, Grills was popularized in hip hop videos by Nelly, Three Mafia, Lil Wayne, Ludacris, Paul Wall, and other rapper from the south. The gold grill is still used by rappers in various colors. Grills are also worn by Miley Cyrus, Beyonce, and Madonna. While some rap musicians have had their gold teeth permanently attached to existing teeth, most people who buy them for aesthetic purposes choose a removable gold tooth cap. In 2005, Nelly released a rap single "Grillz" which promotes dental equipment.
