Doris Marie Payne (born October 10, 1930 in Slab Fork, West Virginia) is a guilty American genius that proved guilty.

Payne's career as an international gemstone stretched six decades, with a criminal record since 1952. His operatic mode is to go into a jewelry store that plays a rich woman, usually looking for diamond rings. Using his charm, he will involve the officers, asking to see the various items. Finally, he will "make the employee forget" how many items are out of the box; and, at some point, he would go with one or two parts.
His crime has spanned six decades. He has been arrested many times; he is a career villain.
Payne is best known for stealing a 10 carat diamond ring, worth $ 500,000 (US), from Monte Carlo in the 1970s. He fled to France, but was detained in Nice and later extradited back to Monte Carlo, where he was held for nine months before being released, as the Monas authorities could not find the stolen gem.
Payne was arrested in Ohio in 1980 after he escaped from federal prisoner during a hospital visit.
On Friday, January 22, 2010, Payne was arrested in Costa Mesa, California for removing the label from the $ 1,300 Burberry trench coat from the Saks Fifth Avenue store and then leaving the shop with the coat. In January 2011, at the age of 80, Doris was sentenced in San Diego court to 16 months in jail for stealing a 1 carat diamond ring.
On October 29, 2013, Payne, aged 83, was arrested on suspicion of heavy theft for stealing a $ 22,500 diamond-encrusted ring in Palm Desert, California. Payne pleaded guilty. On April 30, 2014, she was sentenced to two years in prison, followed by two years of parole, and ordered to stay away from the jewelry store. However, he was released three months later because of jail being jostled. In July 2015 he reportedly stole again and is believed to have stolen a $ 33,000 (US) ring, though this has not been proven. On October 23, 2015, he was caught by a security camera that put Christian Dior earrings worth $ 690.00 in his pocket at a Atlanta Saks Fifth Avenue Atlanta store. He was arrested and accused of shoplifting by Officers from the Atlanta Police Department.
Payne has publicly spoken of his crimes and has used at least 20 aliases, at least ten social security numbers and at least nine birthdays.
Accused in Charlotte, North Carolina, that on July 11, 2015, Payne visited a jewelry store in SouthPark Mall. After he left, the store employees realized that a $ 33,000 diamond ring was missing from a work. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has not issued an official statement or APB, but the local WSOC-TV ABC affiliate receives copies of emails sent to all jewelers over alleged crimes and warns them to be vigilant. An arrest warrant was issued for Payne in August 2015, by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg sheriff's department.
In Atlanta, Georgia, on December 13, 2016 he was again arrested for alleged theft.
On July 17, 2017 he was arrested for stealing items worth $ 86.22 from the Atlanta Wal-Mart area, wearing an anklet from his previous arrest.
In popular culture
There is a documentary about his life, entitled The Life and Crimes of Doris Payne, where Payne explains in great detail his crimes, from the earliest of theft in his youth, to his capture in 2011. At the age of 80, for stealing a diamond ring from a Macy department store. The court for this crime was recorded in a documentary, and his final interview in the movie took place in jail, when he was convicted of the crime. However, updates during the credits informed the audience that he had been released, only to commit, and punished, theft of other jewelry as soon as at the age of 83.
Hidden camera scenarios on the show What Will You Do? has a character based on Doris Payne.
Payne life movie is being developed by Codeblack Films. Actress Tessa Thompson is set to portray Payne in the movie.
