Shining World is a company that designs and sells certified engagement rings and other jewelry as an ethical source. According to Businessweek it has been influential in creating a market for jewelry that appears to be ethically sourced.

The idea for Brilliant Earth was conceived in 2004 by two Stanford alumni, Beth Gerstein and Eric Grossberg. After the difficulty of finding his ethically produced engagement ring in 2003, Gerstein discovered that Grossberg had conducted a feasibility study at Stanford indicating that there was enough consumer demand to validate the business model. Both Brilliant Earth were established in August 2005. The company's website was launched in July 2006. The company's diamonds originally sourced exclusively from the Diavik and Ekati mines in Canada. The Canadian mine is the primary source of an ethically mined diamond industry, as working conditions are governed by the government. Since then Brilliant Earth has also started taking diamonds from Namibia and Botswana, where it judges that the diamonds are sourced from the company's ethical standards. Brilliant Earth uses recycled gold, silver and platinum material or obtains it from cooperatives that meet the standards set by the Alliance for Responsible Mining. Safir companies are from Australia or Malawi. It also sells "vintage rings" that already have previous owners.

Brilliant Earth donates five percent of its profits to charities that help African communities affected by conflict diamonds. It also "won the concept of buying a 'conflict-free' diamond that does not contribute to war and dictatorship."

Brilliant Earth sells jewelry through its website as well as in showrooms in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston, and Chicago.

Controversy

In June 2017, The Next Web reported Brilliant Earth showed their significant amount of available inventory as Canadian origin, although eight out of ten registered Indian suppliers showed no registered diamonds from Canadian mines. The report begins after an April 2017 YouTube video posted by diamond industry insider Jacob Worth, where he investigates the origins of Brilliant Earth diamond he bought, allegedly from Canada, to a New York supplier who showed no record of his origin, suggestion.
