Triquetra ( ; Latin tri - "three" and quetrus "cornered") originally meant "triangle" and used to refer to the various forms of three angles. It came to refer exclusively to the more complex form formed of three vesicae piscis (a leaf-like form between two equal-diameter circles when the two centers were in the circumference of another circle), sometimes with a circle additionally in or about three lobes. Also known as the "trinity knot" when double parallel lines are in the graph, the design is used as a religious symbol adapted from the ancient Pagan Celtic image by Christianity, as is common in Christianity. This is similar to the Odin symbol, valknut.

Ancient usage

Celtic Art

Triquetra is often found in insular art, especially metal works and in illuminated manuscripts such as Book of Kells . It is also found in similar artwork on crosses and Celtic plates from the early Christian period. The fact that triquetra rarely stands alone in medieval Celtic art has generated reasonable doubt about its use as a symbol of ultimate belief. In the manuscript it is used primarily as a space filler or ornament in a much more complicated composition, and in knotwork panels it is a design motif integrated with other design elements. This widely known node has been used as a single symbol for the last two centuries by Celtic Christians, pagans and agnostics as a sign of special things and the threefold.

Japanese use

Triquetra has become a well-known symbol in Japan called Musubi Mitsugashiwa . Being a sign of Aryan Iak? I dynasty, it reached Japan with dynasty K ?? yap? Yes spreading technology and Buddhism through the Khotan Kingdom, after which Japanese katana swords are called, Chinese and Korean.

Germanic paganism

Triquetra has been found in runstone in Northern Europe and on early Germanic coins. Presumably it has a pagan religious meaning and has a resemblance to valknut , a symbol associated with Odin.

Christian Use

Symbols have been used in the Christian tradition as a sign of the Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit), especially since the rise of Celtic in the 19th century. When modern designers began displaying triquetra as a stand-alone design, it was reminiscent of a three-leaf shamrock that was equally offered as a Trinity symbol by Saint Patrick. also suggest that triquetra has a resemblance to a Christian ????? symbol. Triquetra has been used extensively in sculpture, clothing, art books and Christian stained glass. It has been used on the title page and binds some editions of the New King James Version.

A very common symbol representation is with a circle passing through three interconnected triquetra rings. The circle emphasizes the unity of the whole combination of three forces. It is also said to symbolize God's love around the Holy Trinity.

The modern usage

In contemporary Ireland, it is traditional for lovers to exchange jewelry such as necklaces or rings that signify their affection. Triquetra, also known as the "trinity knot", often found as a design element is a popular Irish jewelry such as kladdagh and wedding rings or other engagements.

Neopaganism

It is difficult to determine the date of origin of Irish triquetra, and whether it was first used in a Christian or pagan context; the distinctive artistic style of interlace/knotwork is not fully developed until ca. 7th century, but triquetra is the simplest node. Celtic infidels, or even neopagan who are not of Celtic cultural orientation, can use triquetra to symbolize mythological concepts and figures.

Due to its presence in petty Celtic art, the Celtic Reconstructionists use triquetra both to represent one of the various triplicities in cosmology and theology (such as the tripartite division of the world into the realm of Land, Sea and Sky), or as a symbol of one particular Celtic triple goddess, for example the goddess war, The MorrÃÆ'gan.

German neopagan groups who use triquetra to symbolize their faith generally believe that it originates from the Norse and German origins.

This symbol is also sometimes used by wiccan and some new people to symbolize the Three Goddesses, or as a protective symbol.

Popular culture

Triquetra is often used artistically as a design element when used Celtic knots. Many who identify as modern Celtic can use symbols to display identification with Celtic culture, whether they live in Celtic Nations or diaspora.
