A push present is a gift father gives to mom to mark the chance of giving birth to their child. In practice now can be given before or after birth, or even in the delivery room. A 2004 survey of more than 30,000 respondents by BabyCenter found that 38% of new mothers received encouragement present, and 55% of expectant mothers wanted it, although fewer thoughts were actually expected. About 40% of both groups say the baby itself has become a gift and does not want an extra gift.
The popularity of push prizes is partly due to media coverage of the celebrities who receive them. Examples include a 10 carat diamond ring given to celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe by her husband Rodger after the birth of their son in 2011, Bentley awarded to reality TV star Peggy Tanous of The Real Housewives of Orange County. Micah's husband after the birth of their daughter in 2007, and a diamond and sapphire necklace given to singer Mariah Carey by her husband Nick Cannon after the birth of their twins in 2011.
This trend has resulted in reactions, as some couples dislike the implicit materialism of the push prizes, and prefer to increase assistance in baby duties or care, or save money for children's education.
According to Pamela Holland etiquette experts, there are no guidelines set for push prizes. "The default is no standard," he said. "It makes sense to have etiquette around a wedding or baby shower gift because you invite others into it, but it's too intimate to have rules." In general, women let men know about pushing gifts, not the other way around, although there can be peer pressure from friends to buy one in the man or woman.
The conversation analysis on the online BabyCentre online parenting website over the past three years found that push gift designations have increased 41 percent in the last 18 months, compared with only a two percent increase between 2011 and 2012. A poll of 1,200 BabyCentre mothers also revealed that more than a quarter (27 percent) expect, or already received, 'push present' this year.
